In every household, there is usually a fussy eater, and yes, sometimes that can be our fur-babies. It is important to know the difference between your furbaby being sick, and just being plain fussy. Either way, it is an issue that needs to be dealt with, and preferably in an easy way!
So, first things first, what is a fussy eater? It is hard to define exactly what a fussy eater is, especially when there are many different extremes, but believe me, when I say, you will know. You know when your children throw the vegetables off the plate? Yeah same concept, but no not literally. In simple terms, if your furbaby doesn’t eat the food you give them, and by food, I mean proper pet only food (not your dinner leftovers) then yes, they are fussy. Speaking of leftovers, if this is what you are giving your furbaby then do not be surprised if they stick their nose up at some proper pet food. Wouldn’t you if you were them? Why have dry biscuits if you can have roast chicken. In all seriousness though, it is not a good idea to feed our furbabies leftovers. Yes, we love to spoil them, but this could just end up harming them in the future. It can cause obesity if your furbaby is not getting the proper nutrients it needs, just like us. Every now and then a left-over potato or slice of chicken can be nice as a treat, but a full meal or too many treats are not going to do your furbaby any good.
However, it is also important to understand when fussy eating becomes a cause for concern. If your furbaby has always been a fussy eater, then I wouldn’t worry too much, other than to try to wean them off this behaviour. But more on that later. You do, however, have cause for concern if your furbaby has a sudden disinterest in food, especially if they normally have an interest, or are beginning to lose weight. If this is the case, it might be a good idea to get them checked out by your vet, particularly if it has been going on for more than 24 hours, as there could be more going on than just being a ‘little’ fussy.
